Thirteen Polish officers served under Pulaski in the legion. The best assessment of Pulaski’s legion came from a British officer who called them simply “the best damned cavalry the rebels ever had”. In Minnesota, Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, has warned of more “nightmare” numbers to come, even as the state has instituted new restrictions on bars, restaurants and social gatherings in an attempt to stop the spread.

Perry’s first sober house, called Safe Haven, was shut down amid complaints about noise and drug use. Shortly after that, he opened RES. While sober home certification is considered an improvement over how sober homes operated just a few years ago, it’s not clear how many uncertified homes like Perry’s are in Massachusetts. Some treatment providers estimate that only about 20 percent of the sober homes operating in the state are certified. A recent General Accountability Office report looked at sober housing in five states, including Massachusetts. It mentions the complaint process as being significant, but it also says there were no recent revocations of any sober home certifications in Massachusetts. The report also cites the settlements the state reached between 2007 and 2015 with laboratories accused of paying kickbacks to recovery homes for patient referrals for urine drug testing that was not medically necessary.

H Massachusetts Cavalry

After the Grand Review, May 23, the regi­ment went into camp near Cloud’s Mill and later at Fairfax Court House. Here, on the 20th of July, it was mustered out of the United States service. Two days later it started for Massachusetts, returning to its old rendezvous at Camp Meigs, Readville, where, on August 3, 1865, the men were paid off and the regiment disbanded. The regiment lost a total of 239 men during service; 6 officers and 93 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 140 enlisted men died of disease. Four companies near Hagerstown, Md., until November 16, then moved to Washington November 16–25, and duty there refitting until December 13, Bloomfield November 2–3. The regiment lost a total of 162 men during service; 4 officers and 28 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 2 officers and 128 enlisted men died of disease.

Four new companies were organized December 5. Provost Marshal’s Command, Army of the Potomac, to May 1865. Headquarters, Army of the Potomac, to June Sobriety 1865. First Battalion was initially formed as Independent Battalion, Massachusetts Cavalry . It was assigned to the regiment on February 12, 1864.

Many voters in the suburbs have already turned out to vote via mail, so the focus now shifts onto the cities, where fewer people used that option, Galvin said. General Kazimir Pulaski was mortally wounded by a cannon shot as he charged into battle during the Battle of Savannah on October 9, 1779. During this time, enemies would normally shoot their wounded opponents with a musket but instead, Pulaski’s enemies were impressed by his courage and bravery. They allowed Pulaski to be carried from the battlefield. Considered one of the most experienced generals of the Continental Army, he died at the age of 34, giving his life to the American cause. In September 1777, he took part in his first battle on American soil on the Brandywine Creek between Chester and Philadelphia. On Washington’s recommendation, the Continental Congress appointed Pulaski General of the Cavalry.

Detached Duty

“Fewer people have voted by mail in the cities so if the turnout is fairly even, especially if there are local contests, there will probably a higher raw number of people going out in the cities,” Galvin said. Kennedy has also called in the cavalry — House colleagues are pulling out all the stops for him. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made an unexpected endorsement of Kennedy, and days later drew almost 600 of his supporters for a get-out-the-vote rally on Zoom. Reps. Lieutenant Tucker was wounded April 1. In all on these two days the regiment lost about 20 officers and men killed, wounded, and missing. These engagements broke the Confederate right, uncovered the Southside Railroad, and insured the fall of Petersburg.

Lieutenant Colonel Crownin­shield now became colonel, Major Forbes, lieutenant colonel, and Captain Rumery, major. Having been joined by Major Crowninshield’s Battalion, Aug. 6, the career of the regiment as a unit began. At Coyle Tavern near Fairfax Court House, Aug. 24, 1863, in a fight with Mosby’s Battalion the 2d Cavalry lost two killed, two wounded, and sev­eral prisoners.

With the fighting winding down on the Little River Turnpike, the sphere of combat shifted to the Snickersville Pike between the remainder of Kilpatrick’s and Munford’s brigades. It is probably irrelevant as to whether Lieutenant Colonel Greely Curtis or Major Henry Higginson ordered the regiment into Sober companion the fight. Whatever the case may be, Higginson ordered his battalion forward to engage the 2d Virginia just east of the Furr House. The Virginians had been sent ahead to watch the Turnpike and to hold their position long enough for the rest of the brigade to arrive should they encounter the enemy.
